Woody 1 — the attic studio

What it is like

Woody 1 is the one people remember, because of the roof. The ceiling slopes on both sides and two skylights sit in the slope, so the light changes through the day in a way it does not in a flat-ceilinged room. In summer that means waking up early; in winter it means watching the weather come across the rooftops from bed.

The room is one open space. The bed sits against the long wall with a small oak table on each side, a wardrobe opposite, and the kitchen run along the far end. A small square table with two folding chairs sits under the slope — enough for breakfast and a laptop, not for a dinner party.

It is a compact, pale, uncluttered room: white walls, grey tiled floor, pale wood, and one green tree painting above the bed. If you want a Zagreb attic with a view, this is the one. If you want space to spread out, take Woody 2 instead.

The view

The windows look out over an ordinary, handsome stretch of Zagreb rooftops — orange pantiles, nineteenth-century façades, and in the distance the twin neo-Gothic spires of the cathedral. It is not a postcard view framed for you; it is the city as it actually is from the fifth floor.
